Why Perimenopause Can Feel So Overwhelming

Why Perimenopause Can Feel So Overwhelming (And It’s Not Just Hormones)

One of the things I hear most often from women in perimenopause is this:

“I just don’t feel like myself anymore.”

They usually have difficulties to explain exactly why.

Sometimes it’s not one dramatic symptom. It’s more of an overall feeling:

  • less energy

  • less resilience

  • feeling more emotional than usual

  • becoming easily overwhelmed

  • sleeping differently

  • not coping with stress in the same way

  • feeling disconnected from their body

Many women tell me they can’t quite pinpoint what has changed — only that something feels different.

And this can be confusing, especially when life on the outside may look the same.

You are still working, caring for others, managing responsibilities… yet internally, things feel harder.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.

And importantly, it is not all in your head, and it is not just hormones.

Hormones Matter, But They’re Not the Whole Picture

Hormonal shifts during perimenopause are real and significant.

Changes in estrogen, progesterone, and the whole hormonal rhythm can indeed influence:

  • mood

  • sleep

  • energy

  • appetite

  • cycle changes

  • temperature regulation

  • concentration

These shifts can absolutely affect how you feel.

But focusing only on hormones can overlook a bigger truth: your body is an interconnected system.

Hormones do not operate alone. They interact with your nervous system, stress levels, sleep quality, nutrition, digestion, metabolism, emotions, and life circumstances.

This is why two women with similar hormonal changes can have very different experiences.

Perimenopause is not just a hormone story. It is a whole-body transition.

Stress Tolerance Often Changes in Perimenopause

Another common thing women say is:

“I used to cope with this before… why does it feel so hard now?”

This can be one of the most frustrating parts i have seen in perimenopause.

Things that once felt manageable may now feel draining:

  • busy schedules

  • poor sleep

  • work pressure

  • emotional demands

  • constant multitasking

  • lack of recovery time

You may notice you have less capacity for pushing through. This is not weakness.

It is often a sign that the body is asking for a different pace, different support, and different expectations.

Many women have spent years functioning through stress. Perimenopause can be the stage where the body says: “What worked before is no longer sustainable.”

Nervous System Load and Body Stress Accumulate

Perimenopause often arrives in a season of life that is already full.

Many women are navigating careers, parenting, caregiving, relationships, emotional responsibilities, and unfortunately years of accumulated stress.

Even before hormones begin to shift, the system may already be carrying a lot.

Then add:

  • disrupted sleep

  • fluctuating energy

  • mood changes

  • body uncertainty

  • health anxiety

  • pressure to keep performing as normal

No wonder so many women feel overwhelmed. Sometimes the body is not “breaking down.” It is actually responding intelligently to the total load it has been carrying.

Gentle Support Matters Now

This is why perimenopause often asks for a new approach. And it requires an open mind and a true desire to live well. Not more force, not more self-criticism, not trying to out-discipline your body.

BUT gentler, steadier support.

This may look like:

  • more recovery time

  • nervous system regulation

  • nourishing movement

  • steadier rhythms

  • less all-or-nothing thinking

  • learning to listen to your body earlier

For many women, this phase becomes an invitation to relate to themselves differently.

Not as a robot to optimise. But as a body asking for care.

How Qigong Can Help During Perimenopause

Qigong is a gentle mind-body practice using movement, breath, posture, and awareness.

It can be especially supportive in perimenopause because it works with the whole system.

Rather than forcing change, qigong helps create conditions for balance.

My patients have seen tremendous support in:

  • stress regulation

  • energy flow

  • emotional steadiness

  • better connection with the body

  • tension release

  • grounding and calm

  • feeling more present in themselves

It is accessible, gentle, and adaptable to different energy levels.

Some days you may want movement. Some days you may need softness. Qigong can meet both.

A Final Reminder

If you feel unlike yourself right now, it does not mean you are failing.

It may mean your body is moving through an important transition and asking for new forms of support.

Perimenopause can feel overwhelming — but it can also become a doorway into a wiser relationship with your body and the world around you.
